Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam , in Kerala, India, famous for its backwater tourism.It is set in the backdrop of the Vembanad Lake which is the largest freshwater lake in the state of Kerala.Kumarakom is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary where many species of migratory birds visit. The Vembanad Lake, the largest backwater in Kerala, is habitat for many marine and freshwater fish species and it teems with Karimeen (Pearl spot also known as Etroplus suratensis) shrimp (Metapenaeus dobsonii) common name Poovalan chemeen. The bird sanctuary extends over 14 acres (57,000 m²), and came into existence following preservation efforts from the government. If you are lucky you will chance upon a Siberian Crane, a special visitor during the migratory season.[3]It is a very beautiful place to live. It is a major tourist attraction.
Kumarakom has a moderate climate throughout the year. It is a balanced tropical climate, which has two monsoons south west and north east. The average rainfall is 1100mm.

 

Kumarakom Bird sanctuaty

Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is situated at Kumarakom in Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala, on the banks of Vembanad Lake. Set in the Kerala Backwaters the bird sanctuary is an ornithologist's paradise and a favorite haunt of migratory birds. The origin of the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, earlier Bakers’ Estate, dates back to 1847.The main attractions are local birds like the waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, Brahminy kite and the duck, as well as the migratory Siberian crane. Parrot, teal, lark, flycatcher and other birds are seen here during their respective migratory seasons. Some of the migratory birds come from the Himalayas, and a few from far away Siberia.
Dawn is the ideal time for bird watching when the birds prepare to leave their forest homes and fly over the lake. An early morning trek, well before sunrise, is recommended for avid bird watchers.


Best Time To Visit :The best time to bird watch is between June and August. To watch Migratory birds, November to February is the best time.

Kumarakom Canal Visit

Kumarakom is also famous for its canals.Kumarakom is mainly irrigated using interspersed waterways and canals of the Meenachil river. The smaller canals are often lined by hibiscus plants which lean partly over the canals to form a green canopy, from which hang the lovely hibiscus flowers. The Kumarakom boat-race is conducted in the big canal in the centre near the market.

Pathiramanal Island

Pathiramanal is a small island in Muhamma panchayat of Alappuzha district. The name 'Pathiramanal' means 'Sands of night'. The scenic beauty of both sides of the lake as well as that of the island is mind blowing. It is home to many rare varieties of migratory birds from different parts of the world.
The small island known for its scenic beauty is also a favourite haunt of rare migratory birds.

Driftwood Museum, Kumarakom is India’s Only One such museum.The Limca Book of Records has certified that Bay Island Museum ( est 2001) located in kumarakom, kerala, the only drift wood museum, showcases objects that have been painstakingly recovered and collected from the andaman seas and beaches by Raji Punnoose (proprietor and curator) during her career as a post graduate teacher in the islands.
The India Book of Records(2013) also has certified that the Bay Island Driftwood Museum(Estt 2001) is the only driftwood museum in India that showcases driftwood of various shapes and sizes.

Thanneermukkam bund

The Thanneermukkom Bund (Thannermukkom Salt Water Barrier) was constructed as a part of the Kuttanad Development Scheme to prevent tidal action and intrusion of salt water into the Kuttanad low-lands across Vembanad Lake between Thannermukkom on south and Vechur on north. Thanneermukkom Bund was constructed in 1974 and is functional since 1976.It is the largest mud regulator in India. This barrier essentially divides the lake into two parts - one with brackish water perennially and the other half with fresh water fed by the rivers draining into the lake.

Kumarakom Boat Race

The Sree Narayana Jayanthi Vallam Kali or Boat Race, at Kumarakom, Kerala is held in the malayalam month of Chingam(usually between mid August to mid September) every year during Onam festival. More than 1,000 oarsmen in boats of different sizes and shapes participate. Even though snake boats participate in this race, the importance is given here is for iruttukuthi, in which about 50 oarsmen row. The successful iruttukuthi wins the Sree Narayana Ever Rolling Trophy.

Vechoor church is situated at the banks of the beautiful Vembanatu lake.The presence of thr backwater add more beauty to the glorious church.The church's history dates back to 1463 according to 'taliyola' writings.Many paintings in the altar of church was brought here by the portugese.The seventh picture of St'Mary was uncomplete at the time of its journey from Portugal to Kerala.But on reaching Kerala,it was seen that the seventh portrait was completed.This miraculous picture is beleived to be kept tin the Vechoor church.

Aymanam village

Aymanam village borders Lake Vembanad on the west, near Kumarakom. Two-thirds of Aymanam consists of ricefields, two meters below sea level; the river Meenachil provides water for the village.Extensive areas of Puncha Padams (Paddy fields)stretches up to Vempanattu Lake.Eraweesvarm Padam,Palliar Padam,Kallumkathra Padam,Puthenkary Padam,Koduvathara Padam,Thollayiram Padam, Ollokkary Padam,Thattarkandam Padam, Menonkary Padam,Pullanapally Padam,Vattakayal, are the names of Paddy fields in Aymanam.

Arundhati Roy's Booker prize-winning novel The God of Small Things was set at Aymanam.i The nearest railway station, 4 km, is Kottayam Railway Station. Aymanam is 85 km from Cochin International Airport.

Pallikudam school

Pallikoodam is a high school in the Kalathilpady area of Kottayam in Kerala Pallikkoodam. It was established as Corpus Christi High School in 1967 by educator and women's rights activist, Mary Roy. The term "pallikkoodam" means school in the Tamil and Malayalam languages.Pallikoodam School has championed for several socio-environmental causes in Kottayam. It protested against the official apathy regarding the Vadavathoor Dump problem and formed the Citizen's Action Forum (CAF) which discusses such issues.There was a lack of water at the Institute of Child Health in Kottayam; it was found that there was adequate water supply to the I.C.H., but the Class IV employees had diverted it into their own quarters where it was being used to irrigate crops. Due to the sustained agitation by the CAF, the water supply was restored.
